Resource Highlights

Vehicle Applications
Make | Model | System |
Renault | Clio, Modus, Megane, Kangoo 1.5 dCi (2001 to 2005) | Diesel Systems |
Summary
Engine running rough or laboring following an extended period of short journeys. This is often caused by soot build-up on the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) which sticks the valve in the closed or more importantly open condition.
Fault code | Fault | Possible Causes |
P0400 |
| The EGR valve does not open |
P0401 | Too little exhaust gas is being recirculated |
|
P0402 | Excessive exhaust gas recirculation |
|
P0403 | EGR signals wrong or implausible |
|
P0404 |
|
|
Resolution
One of the most frequent causes of problems with EGR valve operation is deposits in the valve or seat.
- The valve can be stuck closed, or
- deposits have caused the opening width to be reduced, or
- the valve does not open completely.
