In Europe, the Euro 6c and Euro 6d TEMP specifications, came into force in September 2017. And as with every change, the rules have become increasingly stringent. Whilst the limits are exactly the same, under the updated standards, new vehicles must demonstrate that they can meet original targets on NOx and particulate matter under even harsher test conditions. That means on the road as well as in the lab - a world-harmonized testing procedure called WLTP for Euro 6c and Real Driving Emissions (RDE) testing for Euro 6D TEMP.
The role of the EGR valve in NOx reduction.
These tests have meant that NOx reducing technologies are becoming increasingly important. One of these being the exhaust gas recirculation valve, or EGR valve for short. Integral to the vehicle’s engine management system, it allows a precise quantity of exhaust gas to re-enter the intake the system, effectively changing the chemical makeup of the air entering the engine. With less oxygen, the now diluted mixture burns slower, lowering temperatures in the combustion chamber by almost 150°C, and reducing NOx production for a cleaner, more efficient exhaust.
