Traction Power Inverter Module
Delphi Technologies’ Traction Power Inverter Module (TPIM) contains multiple inverters in a single unit that saves weight, space, and energy.
Used in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications, the TPIM is integrated with the drive unit to provide improved efficiency, range, low-end torque, and high-speed power to provide exact OE performance.

Power modules for electric traction
A power inverter takes direct current (DC) power from a vehicle’s battery and converts it into alternating current (AC) that can be used to power or charge an electronic device, like a phone or laptop. Electrified vehicles however rely on a high voltage power inverter for vehicle propulsion. The electric traction motor runs on AC power converted from DC power stored in the traction battery pack.
Power inverters can work the other way too by taking AC power supplies and converting it into DC to be stored in a battery for later use. This conversion is how electric and hybrid cars equipped with regenerative braking systems can collect and store generate electricity from heat while braking for the propulsion motor to utilize later.
An OE solution for aftermarket power electronics
Some vehicle manufacturers use two motors, one for propulsion and the other to capture regenerative braking energy, meaning each motor would require its own power inverter. Multiple power inverters use up space, increase weight, and decrease overall efficiency. The TPIM was Delphi Technologies’ OE solution.
Delphi Technologies TPIM combines two traction inverters for two electric motors and the third inverter for an oil pump motor, to have a single unit that is bolted into the transmission in a single operation.
Delphi Technologies Viper Inverter Power Switch
This solution saved space, decreased weight, and increased efficiency, but what about thermal management? To reduce the risk of overheating, Delphi Technologies utilized OE technology - the patented dual-sided cooled Viper - to not only power the TPIM, but to keep it cool while doing so. Unlike conventional power modules, the Viper is thermally conductive on both sides and provides a low profile compact solution by reducing the silicon footprint, allowing for greater layout flexibility.
