Resource Highlights
Giving customers a State of Health report for the battery of their EV vehicle is a must for every service. With your diagnostic tool and the right battery knowledge, it can simple and straightforward. In this video, Phil demonstrates on a BYD Dolphin how to…
- Assess the voltage health
- Check battery capacity
- Choose the most relevant data for your customers from what’s available
What is a battery State of Health report?
A state of health (SOH) report for an electric vehicle (EV) battery varies a little from car to car, but in this example it’s a diagnostic assessment that measures the current usable capacity, in comparison to its original capacity when new.
The report is used to indicate and monitor battery degradation over time, as is usually expressed as a percentage.
What are the key pieces of data for a state of health report?
There’s a huge amount of diagnostics data available when running a health check. To not confuse your customer with an overly long report, the key elements to focus on are: temperature, voltage and capacity.
What are things to look for when reviewing the diagnostic data?
When looking at the battery temperature, compare the highest and lowest figures. A difference of more than 5 degrees or more may indicate any issue to be investigated further. Similarly with the voltage, if there is a difference of more than 40 millivolts, there could be a battery problem. Finally with capacity, compare the state of charge of the vehicle when new with your current measurement. Taking a percentage of that will produce the overall state of health figure.
