Need to Know

Vehicle emissions standards are designed to improve air quality by reducing the levels of harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter. Because petrol and diesel engines produce different types of emissions, they’re subject to different standards.

However, these standards vary a great deal across the EMEA region. Follow this guide to ensure you’re meeting them when servicing vehicles.

  • Europe

Emissions regulations across the EU and EEA are broken down into 6 standards, named Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3 etc. Each successive standard was introduced on a certain date, so any cars or light commercial vehicles sold after that date have to meet that particular standard. The United Kingdom currently follows these regulations. The Euro 7 set of standards, is expected to be introduced in 2025. The current highest level, Euro 6, specifies the following maximum outputs:

    Euro 6 emissions standards (petrol)

    • CO: 1.0g/km
    • THC: 0.10g/km
    • NMHC: 0.068g/km
    • NOx: 0.06g/km
    • PM: 0.005g/km
    • PN [#/km]: 6.0x10 ^11/km

    Euro 6 emissions standards (diesel)

    • CO: 0.50g/km
    • HC + NOx: 0.17g/km
    • NOx: 0.08g/km
    • PM: 0.005g/km
    • PN [#/km]: 6.0x10 ^11/km
  • Africa

Vehicle emissions standards are not heavily regulated in Africa. As of March 2017, the only formal policies in place are in the countries highlighted here. All of the other countries have negligible or non-existent frameworks around vehicle emissions.

    Euro 3 or better:

    • Algeria
    • Nigera

    Below Euro 3:

    • Egypt
    • Rwanda
    • South Africa
  • Middle East

As of 2017, the emissions standards in Middle East countries relative to the EU standards framework is as follows:

    At least Euro 3:

    • Israel
    • Jordan

    Below Euro 3:

    • Iran
    • Saudi Arabia

No policy is in place for Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, Oman and Lebanon. No data is currently available for the other countries in the region.
