Delphi R90 Brake Discs

Quality. Everyone says they have it. But the reality is not everyone does. With the introduction of R90 legislation for brake discs and drums it will be clear for all to see who has. And conversely who hasn't. So let’s take a look at what R90 is and why it’s so important….

R90 Certified Brake Discs – Quality Counts!

Trust Delphi for OE quality discs

At Delphi, R90 is just a mere formality. As a leading tier-one manufacturer we’ve been meeting R90 quality standards for some time. However, we’ve recently undergone the rigorous testing to confirm that they are indeed R90 compliant, and therefore perform within a prescribed tolerance of the OE parts they are intended to replace. Just like we knew they would.

Our discs for new vehicles launched after 1st November 2016 will now come with official R90 certification. But we’re not just stopping there. Were also securing R90 certification for discs fitted to popular older vehicle applications. So you’ll still be getting the quality you’ve come to know and love. Just now with the added backing of an industry seal of approval.

What is ECE R90?
ECE Regulation 90, more commonly known as ECE R90, came into effect back in September 1999. Initially applicable to pads, the legislation was recently extended to discs and drums for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles launched after 1st November 2016. Its purpose is simple – to define a minimum level of acceptable quality standards for braking product in the aftermarket, and in turn address the threat posed by lower quality or counterfeit parts.
What does R90 involve?
In order to achieve R90 compliance, every disc must pass a series of tests including performance, dynamic friction comparison, high load integrity and thermal fatigue analysis. During these tests the discs’ dimensions, geometric features, chemical composition, mechanical properties and ultimately braking performance will all be assessed in depth, to confirm that they perform within a fixed tolerance of the OE equivalent.
Why does it matter to you?
Quality can be a matter of opinion - just not when it comes to safety critical parts. Fortunately with R90 it’s no longer subjective. There's no grey area. It's black and white. The part either meets the minimum performance criteria and is R90 compliant. Or it doesn't.  This clear line will not only make it more difficult for lower quality alternatives to reach the market and compromise safety, potentially avoiding unnecessary road traffic accidents. It will also give you peace of mind. So whether you’re a distributor, a garage technician or the car driver, you know that you’ll be getting a quality approved disc that delivers to similar standards of performance as the original part fitted on the assembly line.
What does it mean in practical terms?

Well, take the R90 tests for high load integrity and thermal fatigue as an example. These tests replicate the same stresses the part will be exposed to under every day driving conditions. Such as how well it performs under load. Or how well it withstands prolonged heavy braking compared to the OE part. A substandard part might crack or fracture due to thermal shock, potentially leading to brake failure.

Similarly, dimensional analysis ensures geometric compatibility between the OE and aftermarket disc. If the parts are out of tolerance, even by a small percentage, they may be difficult to install. Worst still you could find your customer returning with complaints about increased noise or judder.
