Resource Highlights

Electric vehicles are becoming more accessible, and we're seeing more of them on the road than ever. Innovations in materials and waste management have paved the way for an all-new range of sustainable parts, accessories, tools, and processes. Plus, new and evolving environmental regulations mean staying competitive and compliant demands a planet-friendly approach.

The future looks green for the automotive industry. Is your workshop ready?

Here are four steps you can take to create a more sustainable workshop.

1. Train your team for EVs and sustainable auto tech

EVs are rolling in fast, and repair shops that aren't prepared for high-voltage systems, battery diagnostics, and regenerative braking repairs will fall behind. Upskilling your team is critical. Invest in EV repair certifications and keep up with valuable industry resources so your techs can safely service hybrids and electric models.

There's more to consider beyond EVs too. Sustainable materials—think carbon fibre-reinforced plastics and bio-based components—are changing how cars are built and repaired. Technicians need to know how to handle these materials and repair instead of replace.

2. Improve your waste management practices

Oil, coolant, brake fluid—the list goes on. Auto shops generate hazardous waste, and the way it's managed matters.

Consider setting up closed-loop recycling for fluids. Store chemicals in spill-proof containers and partner with vendors who specialize in recycling.

For parts, remanufactured and refurbished components may be an option in some cases.

3. Reduce your energy consumption

Shops run on air compressors, lifts, welders, and lighting, but older equipment wastes energy. Upgrading to high-efficiency air compressors, LED shop lights, and smart HVAC systems cuts costs and reduces your environmental footprint. Even simple habits—turning off idle machines and maintaining equipment properly—can make a difference.

If you want long-term savings, consider solar panels.

4. Promote eco-friendly repairs and services

Get your customers on board with your sustainability initiatives.

Promote EV battery maintenance or tyre retreading. Let them know about synthetic motor oils and water-based paints. You could even install a charging station outside your shop to attract EV owners and position yourself as an expert in next-gen vehicle care.

Future-proof your shop

The industry is becoming green. The time to lean in and adopt eco-friendly practices is now.
