Resource Highlights
The EV you’re working on may have oil and a filter, depending on the model and year.
It’s a valuable skill to know how to change them. Take a look as Phil, our Delphi expert, walks you through it step by step on this Tesla. He shows you:
- Removing the under tray and gaining access to the drive unit
- Disconnecting the oil pump
- Removing the oil filter and pump bolts
- Extracting the oil pump and inspecting the seals
- Lubricating and refitting the pump and filter
- Activating the pump and finish the job
Why do some electric vehicles still have oil and filters?
EVs still have moving parts, especially in the differential connected to the electric motor. These parts all require lubrication and in some cases, filtration.
Is the procedure the same for all vehicles?
Not necessarily. Always check the manufacturer’s service guidance for specific instructions for the make and model you’re looking at.
How do I dispose of old oil and filters?
Always dispose of these in accordance with your local environmental regulations.
