Completing a routine check on the 12V battery of a customer’s vehicle used to always involve your trusty multimeter. But with EV vehicles on the road using lithium-ion batteries – like the BYD Seal – you’ll be needing your handy diagnostics tool instead. In this video, Phil shows you how. You’ll learn:

  • Where to locate and access the battery
  • How to access the relevant voltage data
  • Perform the voltage check

Where is the 12V battery located?

On the BYD Seal featured in the video, the battery isn’t under the bonnet unlike many vehicles. As it is a fully EV car, the manufactures have flexibility where to locate the battery. In this model, the battery is housed underneath the rear seats.

What tools do I need to carry out the check?

Traditionally, a battery check is carried out using a multimeter. However, the battery in this vehicle – and many other EVs – is lithium-ion, rather than lead acid. This means that a multimeter isn’t needed and a diagnostics tool can be used instead to record the data.

Is this procedure only for the BYD Seal?

Although you may not have seen many BYD vehicles in your workshop yet, the procedure is generally the same for other makes and models. 12V Li-ion batteries are becoming more popular in other leading brands such as Tesla and BMW.
