Replacing the 12V on EVs such as the BYD Dolphin requires a very different process to what some technicians maybe used to. As the vehicle is fully electric, the manufacturers have flexibility where they place the battery, so in this instance, it’s not under the bonnet. In this video, Phil takes you through every stage step-by-step. Learn:
- Where to locate the battery
- How to access it
- How to disconnect and disassemble
Where is the 12V battery located?
On the BYD Dolphin featured in the video, the battery isn’t under the bonnet unlike many vehicles, instead it is housed underneath the rear seats. To access it, you’ll need to remove the seats and any protective plates around it.
Is it a complicated procedure?
Replacing the 12V Li-ion battery is relatively straightforward. An important step to remember before removing the battery is to disconnect the main engine compartment first.
How do I disconnect the main engine from the battery?
This step is done underneath the bonnet. Ensure you’re wearing the correct safety gear – high-voltage gloves – then disconnect the high-voltage cables to stop the DC-DC from powering the battery. Once done, you can safely return to the battery to disconnect and remove it.
