The evolution of automotive technology has led to the inclusion of numerous electronic control units (ECUs) in modern vehicles. These ECUs are interconnected, sharing data and information to enhance vehicle functionality and safety. However, this technological advancement has also increased the risk of vehicular systems being compromised through hacking. To counter this, manufacturers have introduced a 'Security Gateway' module.

What Is a Security Gateway?

The Rise of ECUs and Connected Vehicles

The number of ECUs in vehicles has surged, largely due to technological advancements and increasingly complex safety systems. Modern cars can have over 100 ECUs, all interlinked and sharing data. These vehicles are often connected to external networks through telematics modules, akin to mobile phones using sim or e-sim cards.

The Need for Security Gateway

While connected vehicles offer numerous benefits, they also risk being compromised via hacking. To safeguard these technologically advanced vehicles, manufacturers have implemented secure gateway modules.

A Security Gateway is a defensive mechanism that limits access to certain diagnostic functions. These functions can only be accessed through registered and authenticated services. This protective measure is crucial in preventing unauthorised tampering and ensuring vehicle security.

Security Gateway vs Pass Through

While Security Gateway restricts access, 'Pass Through' refers to a standard of communication (J-25-34) that enables independent workshops to access original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data and use the vehicle manufacturer's diagnostic software. It's a gateway for technicians to perform diagnostics and repairs by accessing the necessary data directly from the vehicle's system.

Impact on Technician Operations

Challenges in Fault Rectification

Security Gateways have fundamentally changed how automotive technicians work.

In the past, reading and clearing fault codes or resetting service lights were straightforward tasks. Now, with the Security Gateway in place, these operations have become more complex. Technicians can still read fault codes and live data, but they encounter limitations when action is required.

For example, to clear fault codes, 'write access' is needed. However, the Security Gateway often denies this access. Technicians attempting these tasks may receive an error message or find that the fault codes remain unchanged.

Navigating Write Access Restrictions

The key to gaining 'write access' is obtaining an authorisation token, which must be sourced from each vehicle manufacturer. This process is not just a one-time setup but a recurring requirement.

Technicians must establish and manage multiple accounts linked to a different vehicle manufacturer's portal. The complexity doesn't end there. For every operation requiring 'write access', technicians must purchase credits. This system adds a layer of administrative and financial burden to the workshop's operations.

Real-World Implications

In practical terms, a technician working on a vehicle with a Security Gateway can experience delays. A simple task like resetting a service light or recalibrating a front camera, which previously took minutes, can now be a prolonged process. The need to log in to the manufacturer's portal, ensure the availability of credits, and then proceed with the operation can significantly slow down the workflow.

Additional Costs and Time Investment

Beyond the technical hurdles, there's a financial and time aspect to consider. Each operation requiring 'write access' incurs a cost in terms of credits. These costs can accumulate, especially for busy workshops handling a variety of vehicles.

What's more, the time spent managing multiple manufacturer accounts and navigating their portals is time not spent on actual vehicle repairs. This can lead to longer wait times for customers and potential revenue loss for the workshop.

Delphi's Comprehensive Solution

The introduction of Security Gateways marks a significant evolution in the automotive repair industry. These systems enhance vehicle security but also introduce complex challenges for technicians.

Recognising these challenges, Delphi has introduced a comprehensive solution designed to bridge the gap between advanced vehicle security and efficient workshop operations. This approach is tailored to ensure that technicians can adapt to the new landscape of automotive diagnostics and repairs, facilitating efficient and effective servicing in this era of connected and technologically sophisticated vehicles.

BlueTech Features

Delphi's BlueTech diagnostics tool simplifies the process. It integrates Security Gateway capabilities, automatically obtaining authorisation tokens from OEMs. This seamless process allows technicians to bypass the Security Gateway, providing unfettered access to diagnostic functions.

Pass Through Features

Additionally, BlueTech offers 'Pass Through' capabilities. This allows independent workshops to access OEM data and use the vehicle manufacturer's diagnostic software, enhancing the range of services they can offer.

New Software Releases

Delphi plans to release new software, expanding coverage and adding new features. This release includes increased system selections for cars and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as expanded coverage for electric vehicle models.

    • FCA, VAG, MERCEDES, SMART, IVECO – integrated
    • RENAULT, DACIA – via Pass-Thru
